Maharana Pratap, the famous king, and warrior of Mewar, was born in Kumbhalgarh, a fortified city that Rana Kumbha built in the 15th century and expanded in the 19th century. In addition to separating Mewar and Marwar from one another, Kumbhalgarh served as a haven for the rulers of Mewar in times of peril. The Mughal Emperor Akbar, Raja Man Singh of Amber, Raja Udai Singh of Marwar, and the Sultan of Gujarat jointly attacked the fort only once, when there was a water shortage, rendering it defenseless against direct assault. The 36-kilometer-long perimeter walls of the fort of Kumbhalgarh, which was constructed on a hilltop 1100 meters above sea level.
